December 19, 2008
The School District has been engaged in negotiations with the union that represents the District's teachers since last February. Thus far, the teachers and the District have not been able to reach an agreement on a new contract.
In fact, both the Board of Education and the Teachers Association of Sag Harbor have agreed to seek the assistance of a "Fact Finder" from the Public Employees Relations Board. The fact finder will examine the proposals of the District and the teachers and then issue an opinion about what a possible settlement could be based upon his or her findings. It is expected that the fact-finding process could occur during the month of January, 2009.
In order to inform the public about the issues of importance to both the teachers and the District, a special meeting was held on Thursday, December 18 in the Pierson High School library. At that meeting, the District's attorney (and chief negotiator) presented information about the issues of importance that remains unresolved. That presentation can be viewed by clicking here. As you will see from reading the presentation, the issues are complicated and significant. Until a new contract is agreed upon, all the terms and conditions of the contract that expired on June 30, 2008 remain in place. Both parties hope that an agreement can be reached as soon as possible.
