Pierson Environmental Club makes a difference
On a recent visit to Kidd Squid in Sag Harbor, the Pierson High School Environmental Club
threaded native eelgrass through burlap sheets as part of a workshop hosted by the Cornell
Cooperative Extension. Students spent the evening volunteering for a good cause alongside
Environmental Club directors and Pierson science teachers Dr. Robert Schumacher and Rich
Schumacher.
Prior to the event, students discussed the importance of eelgrass on marine ecosystems. Native
eelgrass is a vital marine plant with benefits including shoreline protection, habitat creation and
improved water quality. Using only their hands, they threaded eelgrass one-by-one through the
burlap sheets to make a positive impact on our lands and waters.
